Product Description
Type Fountain pen
Product Name Esterbrook J
Manufacturer and Year Esterbrook, USA -- 1950s
Length 5-1/16"
Filling System The fountain pen is a lever filler with a new sac installed. It's tested and working great. The pencil is cap actuated (clicker almost) style to extend and retract leads. Beneath the cap it specifies that you should use 0.046" leads. This is the "thin" lead size and 0.9mm leads do work. An eraser can be found beneath the cap. Because this is a more modern pencil, you can put leads in the reservoir and they will fall into the clicking system instead of needing to be individually fed into the cone like in older pencils.
Color Pearlescent green-gray with black jewels on either end and steel trim. We're not sure if this was originally Foliage Green or Pearl Gray. The color is very even, though it's a little greener in the barrel area covered by the cap, so it was probably originally green.
Nib FINE OBLIQUE STUB #9314-F steel nib has a nice sweet spot but can be very scratchy when held at an improper angle. It's a little bit springy and a left foot. The 9000 series of nibs have iridium tipping. The 9314-F nib is cataloged as a Relief Fine Oblique or a Relief Fine Stub.
Condition Excellent + condition. The set is evenly faded to a greenish grey. Otherwise the set is in incredible condition. The barrel imprints are clear and there are very few marks on the fountain pen. The pencil has more marks and some scratches. The trim on both pieces looks great and the pen and pencil are both shiny and smooth. No cracks, dings, dents, personalization, or plating wear. We've restored the pen and it's working very well.
