Product Description
Type Small size vac-fil fountain pen and mechanical pencil set, restored and working well.
Product Name Tuckaway Crest set, we know it is a Crest because the caps are completely gold filled. (They are not Crest Deluxes because the Deluxes all had injection mold barrels and only came in solid colors.)
Manufacturer and Year Sheaffer, made in USA -- Early 1940s, these are often called, "second year" Tuckaways.
Length The pen is 4-9/16 inches, the pencil is a hair under 4-1/4 inches.
Filling System The pen has the Vac-Fil system, which we've restored and tested to confirm that it's working well. The pencil takes 0.9mm (or "thin") leads, which it extends via the traditional twist mechanism. The pencil has a split cap and two different chambers. We're not quite sure what they're for but an eraser can be found beneath the upper portion of the cap.
Color Marbled brown striated celluloid barrel, called golden brown, with gold filled cap and trim. The caps say 1/10 14k Gold Filled. The pen has a white dot at the end of the barrel..
Nib MEDIUM two-tone 14k gold Triumph conical nib is quite firm and smooth. The nib is slightly on the broad side so we consider it to be a medium-broad.
Condition Excellent + condition. No cracks or chips, dings or dents, personalization, or major plating wear. Both pen and pencil have handwear but no major scratches. Their imprints are easily read and there are no cracks or chips. The pencil has a few tiny dents towards the very top of the cap. They are nearly impossible to see. The lined patterns are clear on both. Both pieces are working very well, and we've fully restored the fountain pen. Both have been personalized, "Lois Janner," though the imprint on the fountain pen is partially worn. They ship in a Sheaffer box.
