Product Description
Type Vintage fountain pen and mechanical pencil set in original box.
Product Name Gold Seal
Manufacturer and Year Wahl Eversharp, made in Chicago, USA - late 1920s
Length Pen is 5-3/8", pencil is just a tiny bit longer.
Filling System Lever filling system. We have installed a new sac and it's working well. The pencil takes 1.1mm (or "thick") leads, which it extends via the traditional twist mechanism, as is often the case with Eversharp, you will have to push the leads to make them retract. We'll include a small pack of leads.
Color Orange hard rubber in the greek key finish with gold plated trim.
Nib FLEXIBLE FINE Eversharp Gold Seal nib is 14k. It's smooth with nice tipping remaining. The feed is marked with an M, but this nib writes more like what we would call a fine. It's got a little flex to it, and with a little pressure the line will vary from fine to broad. See writing sample below.
Condition Very nice condition, excellent except for a couple of flaws. Fountain pen: there is a short ~1/8" crack in the barrel threads, but this is not the fatal flaw it is in many viontage pens because there in a a metal liner inside the barrel, so the crack is not worsened by the re-sacing process. This crack is detailed in photos below. The color of both pieces is fantastic, very even, no fading. The chased pattern and imprints are very crisp and clear. Both barrel and cap are excellent, very little wear. No scratches or personalization. All of the trim is lovely, with no brassing or plating wear. Pencil: There is a short ~1/4" crack in the barrel, that runs from above the top of the clip and ends at/is held in place by a barrel ring. The rest of the barrel is in similar condition to the pen - very even color and chasing pattern, minimal scratching and wear, and the trim does not show brassing or plating wear. It's not visible in the photos, but the top of the pencil still has the chalk mark intact, and it reads "Eversharp 4009C $3.50" with the double checkmark
The set ships in an original Wahl-Eversharp box, with the sticker of a Cleveland OH jewelry shop affixed to the top.
