Product Description
Type Vintage telescoping mechanical pencil, probably worn on a lady's chatelaine.
Product Name A pencil from the Alwrite line.
Manufacturer and Year A. T. Cross, USA - 1920s or 1930s. There is a mark A-X-T on the band just below the end piece - it's like a monogram for A.T. Cross, where the cross is represented by a large X in the middle position. .
Length About 3-1/4" fully retracted, and 4-3/4" fully extended (not including the ring on top)
Filling System The pencil works with the barrel extended or retracted. You simply twist the end piece to extend or retract the lead (it may require a little "encouraging" by firmly seating the lead to properly retract). We've tested 1.1mm leads and they work.
Color Gold plated. The extended barrel has lengthwise lines. Barrel has a pattern of engraved chevrons, with four black (lacquer?) bands. The end piece has little knobs around the edge.
Condition Excellent condition with no cracks, dents or dings. This is an unusual, attractive, and shiny pencil with a unique design. The cone has scratching and some pitting. The chevron patterned barrel has scratching, but looks quite good with no brassing or plating wear. The black bands have microscratching and some chipping on the edge (most prominently on the 2nd one from the pencil tip). The lined extender piece looks good. The end piece has some brassing, especially on the top nearest the ring. The imprint is mostly clear. There might be some personalization on the band that has the imprints, though it's a bit hard to make out.
