Product Description
Type Fountain Pen
Product Name 400/M400 - this pen has elements of both
Manufacturer and Year Pelikan, Germany - multiple time periods. The cap has indications of being made in 1950-54, and the body of the pen and nib have characteristics that appeared 1982-97. See note below.
Length Fountain pen is 4-5/16"
Filling System Piston filling system. Tested and working well.
Color Black with a gray ink viewing window. Gold-plated trim.
Nib FINE 14c nib. Smooth and with great tipping material.
Condition Excellent condition. The barrel has marks from the cap edge, and light scratching all over. The piston knob has light scratching. The section looks really good. The cap band has brassing on the lower edge. The clip has plating wear along the sides and on the clip ring. The metal crown cap top has brassing and some tiny dents around the upper edge. The Pelikan icon on top of the cap looks good. The imprints are clear.
Note: The cap has a metal sleeve inside the cap lip, no engraving on the cap band, and the top of the clip has a slightly rounded edge. These are all characteristics seen in the Pelikan 400 made from 1950-54. Several features of the rest of the pen appear in the M400 between 1982-97 - no threads seen beneath the piston knob, the section threads do not touch the barrel (there is a distinct plain ring of plastic there). The nib and feed are also from the later period - the feed is plastic with perpendicular fins, the engraved lines on the face do not touch the nib slit, and the nib size is italicized rather than a regular font.
