Type Crescent filling vintage fountain pen and mechanical pencil set, repaired, restored and working well.
Product Name "All Metal" is the term that's usually used for these. The pencil is marked model 4B, which we found in a 1924 Conklin catalog from the folks at Pen Collectors of America.
Manufacturer and Year Conklin, made in Toledo, Ohio -- 1920s.
Length The fountain pen is 4-7/8" long, and the pencil is 5-5/16" long.
Filling System Lever filler. We've restored it with a new sac and its working very well. The pencil takes 1.1mm leads, which feed into the tip. The tip of the pencil twists to extend the lead, but you need to push it in in order to retract it.
Color Black hard rubber (BHR) with a gold filled overlay. The patterned overlay is checkerboard separated by solid lines.
Nib Fine FLEXIBLE Conklin Toledo #2 nib is smooth with nice tipping material. There are some deep scratches (tool marks?) on the nib. It offers almost full flex and great line variation. Please see the writing sample below.
Condition Excellent + condition, in a vintage velvet lined Conklin box. Fountain pen: There is light handwear all over, but no dents or dings. The barrel has some marks from capping. There are small marks and scratches on the cap and barrel, but no brassing, but the pen overall looks quite nice. The patterns are well defined. The clip has a bit of plating wear along the sides. The hard rubber section is still a nice dark black. Mechanical pencil: Like the pen, the pencil has microscratching, but no dents or dings. There are some small touches of tarnish throughout, but no plating wear. The set ships in a small paperboard box with interior velvet lining. The gold decorative pattern on the top of the box is really well preserved. There is some slight wear on the corners and a bit of glue dripped in some spots, but the box is overall in fantastic shape.
