Product Description
Type Vintage lever filling fountain pen and pencil set, in box.
Product Name Five Dollar pen
Manufacturer and Year Conklin, Toledo, Ohio, USA -- 1932 (Our Conklin reference book says that Conklin's 1932 catalog introduced this green and white color)
Length Pen is 4-1/4", and pencil is 4-3/16" (neither of these measurements include the ringtop hardware).
Filling System Lever filler. We've restored it with a new sac and it's working very well. The pencil takes 1.1mm lads.
Color Green and white celluloid. One thin gold band on the cap. There are also black and white bands at both ends of both pieces; these are what distinguish this model from the Three-Fifty in the same catalog.
Nib FLEXIBLE FINE gold #2 Conklin Toledo nib is smooth with nice tipping. Nice line variation from fine to broad. See our writing sample below.
Condition Superior condition, in box. Both pieces: Under magnification, you can see microscratching and handwear, but in the hand, they are really great looking. The material is in excellent shape, and the color is really stunning. Sharp contrast between the colors, and very little fading. The fountain pen barrel has a bit of ambering, and the portion that sits underneath the cap is a bit darkened. The plating on the cap band and lever is fantastic. The ringtop hardware has some small bits of brassing. There are some lesser scratches and marks of wear on the cap. No cracks or chips, dings or dents, or personalization. The imprint is worn in its middle, but readable. The pencil looks even better than the pen, with almost no discoloration in the material at all. The gold band looks excellent, and there are just a couple of tiny spots of plating loss on the nose cone. This is a remarkably well-preserved set, rarely seen.
