Type lever filler fountain pen with matching pencil
Product Name Blackbird (written on the cap, nib, barrel, feed, and section!). 5248 on the end of the barrel.
Manufacturer and Year Mabie Todd Blackbird, England -- 1930s. Blackbird refers to the middle quality line of pens produced by Mabie Todd.
Length Both the fountain pen and mechanical pencil are 4-13/16" long.
Filling System Lever filler, restored with a new sac. The pencil takes 1.1mm leads, which extend and retract by holding the nose cone and twisting the body of the pencil.
Color Grey pearl marble celluloid with a silver colored lever and a chrome plated clip. The ends are inset with black discs.
Nib 14k "Blackbird G" nib. It is a springy nib which is both smooth and flexible, with line variation from fine to broad (we consider it semi-flexible). The tines spread with ease. The feed says "Blackbird." See the writing sample below.
Condition Excellent condition. Fountain pen: There is light scratching and handwear. The top of the cap has heavier scratching. There is brassing and some dots of plating wear on the lower half of the clip and ball end, but the upper half actually looks quite good. The lever has plating wear and some dots of pitting. Mechanical pencil: Light handwear and scratching. There is some plating wear on the very bottom of the clip near the ball end, and a blotch of plating wear on the ball. The nose cone has moderate scratching, but no real brassing or plating wear. The imprints on both pieces are clear.
