Color Black hard rubber with gold overlay in the "snail" pattern. It's not hallmarked with regard to the gold content, but that's often the case with items from this era. Many of the advertisements that we see in Mabie Todd books refer to the gold overlays of this era being rolled gold and anywhere from 9k - 18k. This pattern is simply called "chased" in "The Swan Pen" book, but it's an elaborate, scrolly pattern. There's also a picture of a pen identical to this, down to the personalization, on pg 84 of David L. Moak's "Mabie in America" book. The pen is personalized "J.M. Hale Elgin House Kingswood" in mid-barrel.
Nib MEDIUM 14k Mabie Todd & Co NY nib. Smooth and springy, and with flexibility from medium to a fat broad with light pressure. See our writing sample in the photos. Excellent tipping material.
Condition Excellent condition for this lovely eyedropper. There is brassing and plating wear on the high points of the body, as well as at the end of the barrel from posting the cap and on the cap lip. The end of the barrel has some shallow dents. The front of the barrel, near the section, has splotches of plating wear. There are some tool marks on the section, which has faded to a deep chocolate brown. The top of the cap has a ring of brassing, and some shallow dents. The imprints are clear.
