Product Name Aureus.
Manufacturer and Year Marlen, Italy -- circa 2002 (the included coin is dated).

Filling System Coin filler. It's the same concept as a lever filler, where the ink sac is mechanically squeezed. Here, instead of a lever, there's a slot on the barrel, where you insert a coin or similar object to press down on the ink sac. There is a coin included in the box. We had the sac replaced by Marlen in June of 2025.
Color Brown and blue celluloid, kind of marbled and in a lengthwise striped pattern. The trim is bronze. The top of cap features a replica Aureus coin.
Nib FINE 18k gold nib, which has an interesting satin finish.
Condition Near Mint condition, in box with paperwork. There is light microscratching on the pen, but no visible handwear or signs of use. The trim looks fantastic. Imprint is clear. No dents, dings, cracks, or personalization. Ships in bronze colored tin with lined fabric interior; there is some light patina on the outer surface. The coin is also present in the box. The outer cardboard box has some handling wear.
According to the Marlen website: "Already during the Roman Empire, there was a currency that, by definition, was international: the Aureus (danarius aureus). To remember that coin, Marlen presents AUREUS, a collection with a classic and harmonious shape, made of an original marbled celluloid with a multi-chromatic charm where purple fades into bronze and aubergine merges with cobalt blue. The precious metal finishes and the precision of the decorative elements give it the exclusive and extremely interesting look that suits it well. The top of the cap is decorated with a reproduction of the Aureus Pertinax and features the Latin inscription “IMP CAES P HELV AVG”. The loading system is by lateral compression obtained by inserting the coin (supplied) into the appropriate slot, decorated in an original way with a reproduction in precious metal of the stylized column, which has always been a recurring and characterizing element of Marlen products; finally, the clip is fixed by hand with two visible nails, as it was used in the past."
