Condition Excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or dents. This is a classic pen style in a desirable color and with excellent barrel transparency. The barrel has light to some moderate scratching with a few long scratch lines. The cap has great dark black coloring. It has light to moderate scratching. The cap band has brassing along the lower edge as well as light scratching. The clip has brassing and scratching on the face and along the sides. The thin clip ring has brassing and plating wear. The top gold piece has a bit of brassing on its lower edge. The top black piece with the pelican looks good. The imprints are clear.
The 400NN model from this time period is interesting because it features a "secure locking cap", with a detail in the cap's threading that helps to prevent it from unscrewing in a pocket. You will notice when you twist the cap there is a slight resistance about halfway through the rotation; this is a small friction ring inside the cap that provides additional security. There's some more detail and a diagram here at The Pelikan's Perch.
