Product Description
Type Piston-filling fountain pen, made specially for Levenger
Product Name M250 Brown Tortoise. See notes below for some more details on this special production model.
Manufacturer and Year Pelikan, Germany -- 1987.
Length The fountain pen is just a hair under 5" - right between 4-15/16" and 5" on our ruler.
Filling System Piston filling system. We have tested it and it's working well. We guarantee the filling system for a year from the date of purchase.
Color Dark brown (almost black) cap, section, and piston knob, tortoise barrel. Gold trim.
Nib FINE 14k 585 nib.
Condition Excellent condition. There is light scratching on the cap and barrel. The clip has light plating wear around the open end and along the edges; the clip ring has brassing. The bird logo is slightly worn, but still visible. The cap bands have some plating wear along the lower edge. The section looks good. The barrel overlay ("binde") has some red staining near the section, corresponding with the area where the cap overlaps. The rest of the binde has light scratching, but the tortoise pattern and striping looks great. Barrel transparency is excellent. The piston knob has some light scratching. The trim ring on the piston knob looks good. The imprints are clear and easily read.
Notes: This is an unusual model, and was difficult to identify! We spent a long time trying to decide between an M200 or M400, and eventually found the answer on Joshua Danley's wonderful Pelikan's Perch (scroll down to "M250 Brown Tortoise" on the linked page). It's the size of a modern M2xx or M4xx, with a plastic cap derby that points to a 2xx but then there are the double cap bands of a 4xx. The 14k nib is also 4xx, though of course we know that Pelikan nibs can often be exchanged between the 2xx and 4xx lines. The barrel is an old-style M600 barrel (!), with a wide trim band on the piston, and no trim ring on the section. Another great resource for researching Pelikans is Pelikan Collectibles, and here you can find the M200 reference page, which lists this under the "M250 (Old Style)" heading.
