Quality Pen, All Expectations Not Entirely MetReview by Hunter
I received this pen about a week ago and have had the pleasure of writing with it near daily since. The nib, as is expected from Jowo nibs (or at least what I've read online), is very good and quite enjoyable to write with. As a fine nib it writes a little wider than I was expecting for a nib described as fine, being roughly relatable to my Kaweco medium nib as far as writing width. Perhaps it is because the nib is more wet, but overall the flow is excellent, the writing experience is smooth and has very little feedback. The most important aspects of the pen as a writing tool are quality. Second to last is that the converter that it comes with looked a touch shoddy but as of yet works quite well. With respect to the section, it is quite lengthy and a well thought out width that feels quite comfortable. I enjoy writing with this for long periods, which is almost necessary given the amount of turns one must make to twist open or close this pen. I believe that it requires between 3 and a 1/2 to 4 full turns to open, which means opening and closing takes an amount of time I never thought would be inconvenient, but it is somewhat oddly enough. I never thought that this info was important when watching or reading pen reviews in the past, but this pen has made me rethink this a bit. Not a big deal, but still notable.

Here follows my major gripe, and it really should be something expected with handmade pens. That said, this pen cost me around $120 Canadian with shipping so I feel that I should not only be very satisfied with the writing experience, but I feel I should also get a lovely looking pen as well. I ordered a blue, white, orange, green pattern of this pen which the picture above made look like a really neat 1970's five pin bowling ball. I did receive a lovely pen, but in contrast to the above depiction the pen had less contrasting white that made the main body of the pen have a little less expressiveness or "pop," so to say. Of course, it is still beautiful and the product of an artisan making beautiful pens out of really neat ebonite patterns - very cool. What makes me actually frustrated is that the cap is almost an entirely different colourway; it looks as if it was made of strictly white and blue, entirely lacking any apparent orange or green markings. This would not be such an issue if the colourways did not contrast so extremely between the pen body and the cap. What disappoints me further, though, is that the finial has a fair amount of orange and green in it and looks quite nice. I can't claim that there was enough appropriately matching material available, but the fact the pen goes from blue-white-green-orange to blue-white to the former once more frustrates me a bit. It is a bit jarring and takes away from the overall aesthetic of the pen. I guess I could just say that this is the nature of handmade pens and I should my expectations appropriately.

So, it is apparent natural variances like the above mentioned are to be expected from handmade pens, but the variance between cap and body are so apparent to the point that I am disappointed given the price I paid for the pen. Other than this aesthetic issue, everything else about the pen is quite quality, but I believe this should be the case for a pen of this price point. Finally, I want to say that I like this pen a lot, but I would have liked it a fair amount more if the pen I received was closer to the one depicted on this page.

[Peyton Street Pens]

This is a long and considerate review and we appreciate the nib comparison. It's tricky to know what to expect from nib widths but we do include a writing sample on the page for comparison's sake.

As for the color variance, all of the ebonite has variance from batch to batch and even within an individual batch. Swirls and ripples are manually created during the rod production and it means that color concentrations and patterning are rarely consistent. This happens with acrylics too. Since this is a material based difference, it pops up with non-handmade pens too. The Visconti Manhattan Magma is a good example of non-handmade pens that look widely different from pen to pen. Very good fountain penReview by o1984
Very good fountain pen; handwriting is comfortable because of the shape of section and length of pen.
Red black ebonite is beautiful; very good finishes of making. (Posted on 10/4/2018)
